The Jagiellonian University's Center for Natural Science Education invites you to visit its latest temporary exhibition, "Insomnia."
Ewa Stawiarska creates paintings that straddle the line between realism and metaphorical painting. She juxtaposes precisely painted figures, animals, and objects in surprising configurations, creating an atmosphere of dream, fantasy, and a touch of unease. Her works often evoke travel, exotic cultures, and a fascination with the natural world—including the prehistoric world, which the artist explores daily by creating models of prehistoric organisms. The artist's signature palette is intense pink juxtaposed with turquoises and blues. The pastel sweetness of the background contrasts with disturbing motifs in her paintings: snakes, deep-sea creatures, oversized seafood, and symbolic female-animal hybrids. This allows color to become a vehicle for emotion, concealing danger beneath a deceptive, surface beauty.
Her art evokes a dreamlike atmosphere that can, as in dreamlike fantasies, suddenly shift from idyllic to unsettling, revealing hidden fears and questions about the nature of beauty, instinct, and the danger lurking beneath apparent peace.
Ewa Stawiarska graduated from the Faculty of Art at the Karol Pulaski University of Technology and Humanities in Radom, majoring in graphic design. She lives in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski and specializes in sculpting paleontological models from fossils. Professionally, she is associated with the company kamyk.pl. Her works are in museums around the world: the Naturbornholm Museum of Natural History on Bornholm, the Moab Giants Museum in Utah, the Isle of Wight Museum in the UK, Le Musee de la Mer in Martinique, and the Aathal Dinosaur Museum in Switzerland. In Poland, they can be seen at venues including the Jagiellonian University Center for Natural History Education and the University of Lodz Museum of Natural History. In addition to sculpture, she also paints, which she loves. She has held numerous group and solo exhibitions.
The exhibition is located in the Center for Natural History Education and will be open to the public from November 22nd to December 31st, 2025. Admission is free. We cordially invite you!
